It's not about holding back in photography, it's about holding back for upgrading the current M50 or not.

Sometimes camera companies make incremental upgrades, that are designed to appeal to first-time buyers, rather than upgraders. They prefer that upgraders upgrade to a more expensive model.

If it's no upgrade the original model appeals just as much. With that strategy they will sell less. Again: same sensor and same processor makes no sense.

most don't upgrade at every model ..i bet you can't find many that has had more than 4 bodys starting with the 20D to the 90D..most will get every other or upgrade to a higher range. ..if you put to much in a lower camera why will folk buy the flagship.

People generally buy the flagship either for the kudos or because they want something that will still work after being left out in the rain or kicked around for a few years. I would think that if you're weighing up a 5 series against a 1 series, the choice is more likely to be a 1 & a 5 versus two 1s.

When Canon introduced the M50, one criticism was that they had put too much in a lower camera. Maybe someone can dig up what it did to Canon's overall sales and those of the M5 particular but I can't be bothered to.

Canon seem to pick a price point and put in as many features as they can for that price at that time. A few years later, the electronics are much cheaper, the plant is more nearly paid for and they can put a few more goodies in for about the same real introductory price. They even have a price point where the top of the APS-C range meets the bottom of the FF range, giving you a choice of priorities.

Restricting the capabilities of their cheaper cameras doesn't really protect sales of their better cameras, it just loses mass sales to the competition. Canon know this better than any of us.  One thing the Internet has shown is that it's far better to make a tiny percentage on huge sales than a huge percentage on tiny sales.

...you just want a top camera at M50 price ...that's not good business sense

There is no argument for FF vs APS-c (or m43) with shallow DOF..as it's a law of physics and a very subjective personal thing if you want to make use of the shallow DOF only FF can offer

If you wait for a camera that will tick all your boxes ....by then you will have more boxes to tick..... so the wait continues .....David Appleton
