I note that the Z7 was released in 2018 and the D500 in 2016.
In general, high-end equipment has moved on a lot in the last 2 or more years.

Is this a factor?

Not for APS-C. The D500 is still first by a long shot in terms of APS-C cameras for birds. And the only camera that really surpasses it is the A9, which is in a whole other price category, and that is primarily in the AF department.

Pentax makes a great camera -- that is if you exclude AF for birders.  Now we will see whether the new Pentax APS-C is a standout.  Lord knows we have waited long enough.  How can they blow it? But if they do, there are these options:  D500, A9, A7III, A7 IV,  or D5.  If this is a time for reinvesting in a camera and maybe a lens or two (and it is for me) -- what way do I go.  Lets cross our fingers as Pentax users, their new product must be a winner.  Hope, hope, hope.
