I have an interest in archaeology, and have found the inbuilt GPS module and the magnetic compass in my Eos 7D Mk II very useful, for not only recording where I am, but also the compass direction of any photographs. Hopefully both facilities will be included in some new R series bodies in the future. [..]

Canon disabled reading of the electronic compass of the GP-E2 with the R and RP, so I don't think it will make a comeback. It's almost full circle for my cameras:

7D: lacks the fancy hot shoe, GP-E2 works only over usb cable, no compass readout

M: Everything works perfectly

RP: Fancy hot shoe, no compass readout

R5 (which still hasn't shipped): Fancy hot shoe, no compass readout

I think Canon decided that the compass was too much hassle for the users, you have to recalibrate it often for it to be effective and large ferro-magnetic objects tend to confuse it (e.g. dumpsters).
