why non-photographers mess up

There was a recent thread that asked this question, but the answers were harsh and I didn't agree with them. The answer is really simple. To understand, watch this famous video.

We only see what we're trained to see. When anyone, stupid or smart, old or young, focuses on a friend's face, they don't notice the telephone pole sticking up behind their head because the brain has trained itself to ignore things are aren't important. Obviously, a pole 20 feet away isn't important to our food gathering, survival focused brain, so the brain tunes it out. The illusion persists to the printed photo until some photographer points it out.
