Sending GPS location to all R series cameras over Bluetooth via Canon Camera Connect app is relatively simple.
Prior to Digic 8 processor, you can only do it over WiFi. You need to make sure the date/time setting of your camera matches the time on your phone. You then tell the app to start logging locations on the phone. Once a while, you have to connect the app to the camera via WiFi and send the logged location to the camera. That is the hassle I need to go thru with my tiny M6.
On cameras with Digic 8 or later (R, RP, R5, R6 etc.), there is no need to log or send information over WiFi. You can ignore all those buttons on the app. As long as you maintain a Bluetooth connection, for every photo, the camera will ask you phone for its latest location.
If you shoot while your phone is sleeping to save power, then no location will be recorded. I developed a habit of making sure the GPS icon is steady on before I shoot. Otherwise, I have to wake up the phone.
The Bluetooth connection between a phone and a camera is pretty reliable. Once they are paired, they are mated forever (or until you manually unpair them.) I can't say the same for WiFi. About 40% of the time, it takes multiple tries to connect them even if I hold both of them in my hands.
Simplicity for sure it's not the strong point of the sloppy workflow smartphone_app+gps+bt+pairing.
Simple is built-in camera GPS.
The advantage of bt camera geotagging is only for camera maker who can sell the feature in the specs with almost zero effort. Then you (as a customer) realize the feature is not reliable enough to consider it as usable.
