The connection is Bluetooth.
I have tested it only casually, but 1st impression was that it worked with no fuss. There is a gps indicator in the viewfinder that flashes if no gps is available, and it stayed solid when I turned on the feature.

Thank you for the update.
I am professionally involved with reseach and deploymenet use of Bluetooth and WIFI. Bluetooth is by far the best choice and I hoped they would use that because it is much more tailored for connections like GPS requires. The flashing failure mode icon is also excellent. The designer clearly knew what he was doing. I have had much success using Bluetooth for robust link requirements like GPS whereas had it been WIFI I think it might take constant fuss to keep it working. Turing off and on the camera all the time does not help. Wireless bluetooth mice on computers work well as example while WIFI is much faster but requires human in the look. Bluetooth is also used for the newer Canon Remote trigger devices and I have had good luck so far with those on my EOS R whereas the older 5DIV and earlier devices were infra red light triggered and require line of sight access to the front of the camera.
Yes, as posted earlier, I have tried it and while the bluetooth connection was solid, all 450+ photos were tagged with the same GPS coordinates of the spot where I connected the camera to the phone. So yes the connection appears good, but the overall performance of the solution is definitely poor. My 5D4 and 7D2 would show the coordinates of every location along the way, the way it's supposed to be. Hopefully this can be resolved, I'd guess it's a software issue.
Was this using an iPhone or Android device?
iPhone it could have been foreground app issue (location not updated with the app in the background). Android, maybe app permission with location only being available when the app is running rather than always.
iPhone. Once the camera is connected, I stick it in my pocket. I suspected what you mention the first time I saw the discrepancy, but the camera GPS indicator tells me it's connected. it still tags photos with the original location until I disconnect and reconnect. Then I get the new location on every photo. Annoying, but I don't fret over it. Most of my past cameras didn't have GPS at all so I'll get by.
I have the same issue, went out taking photos for 6 hours on the weekend and it only recorded the GPS location for when I turned it on, all 600+ photos had the same location. I have a feeling this has to do with setting location to "always" vs "while using the app". I just set it to always, and I'm gonna give it a try later and see if that helps.
