Regarding the naming question,

K-x -> K-r -> (skip KQ) -> KP -> (skip KO) -> KN

(Yes, I'm glossing over the K-S1/2, but that's justified as Ricoh said at the time that it's a new model line, not a direct replacement of the K-50.)

So they can call it the KN and then in marketing materials let the N stand for New.

K-x, K-r, KP are amateur line of cameras...

K-new is top APS-C - K-7, K-5, K-3....

So please share with us, Dr. Logic, which number is next?

Why K-1 of course... the flagship they thought would replace the K-3.

Not how I recall it. When the K-1 was released, Ricoh said they were doing it as a gesture to the faithful. There was never any mention that I can recall, that this would be the only flagship going forward - except in fan lore (I have on occasion pointed out it isn't a bad APS-C camera, with its half-decent resolution and fairly high frame rate, so I may in fact be somewhat guilty).

When the KP was released, Ricoh (after some initial teeth-grinding as I recall) made it clear that this wasn't the APS-C flagship, just a stop-gap and the real flagship was still coming. Now we know that the APS-C flagship was already somewhat progressed in its development at that time.

The K-1 naming happened because it was the only obvious worthy name left to give such a camera (K10D, K100D, K1000 and pretty much every other significant name being taken), and the fan base had used it early on, confirming the decision.

The general observation here is that people like numbers more than letters. But both will eventually run out.
