Ever since I started photography I've been wanting to acquire every modifier and studio lighting ever made. But since that will never happen short term. Ive decided to make my own umbrella/octobox modifier with attachments.

This modifier cost me less than $20 to make if you own a sewing machine that is. but for all the materials needed to make this convertible umbrella it didn't cost more than $20 shopping from eBay and dollar tree.

Ive seen that convertible umbrellas already exist but what doesn't are honeycomb grids for these umbrellas and modifiers attachments like a strip box. Thats right I created a attachment that will turn the umbrella to a strip box

From all the soft boxes I've seen, they all have these things in common, they all come with or can purchase separately, diffusers, honeycomb grids and reflecting dish.

So here it goes the only convertible umbrella you'll ever need for photography.

I haven't yet made the honeycomb grid. Ill be making that soon. As well as the reflecting disc for beauty dish effect.

I added 6 ways this DIY can be used.

1.) shoot through umbrella

2.) bounce back umbrella, reversible interchangeable skirt

3.) soft box/octobox (back is closed, better than a Brolly umbrella)

4.) add a diffuser

5.) can be used as beauty dish ( just add a disc shape reflector on to the umbrella arm inside the softbox)

6.) stripbox

this is the back which has velcro triangle closer to stop light leakage and full closer.

side view anchored and velcro

inside look at gold reflecting back. two speedlites seen inside

inside look where you can add the second diffuser and also reflecting disc for beauty dish purposes. Has velcro inside for diffuser attachments

stripbox or octostrip attachment

Did you refine modified enlarged your concept? Do you have plans photographs on the sewing process?
