Hello all,
I am looking to upgrade from my Rebel T6i to a full frame Canon. I considered the 5DM4 and R, have used both, but would rather go the mirrorless route. That being said, I am undecided between the R and R6. I only shoot stills, namely portrait photography.
I've spent a lot of time watching and reading reviews on both cameras but still unsure. I am sure that with coming from a Rebel either will be a quality upgrade.
I love that the R6 has higher shooting speeds and the new AF tech.
Unless you shoot action, this will very likely be of little use to you.
My only concern (as it is for most it seems) is the 20MP sensor. It's technically a few less than my Rebel, but would handle low light better regardless.
I'm a landscape shooter but I also do portraits, street, and travel/casual photography. The higher resolution sensor of the R will serve me better, but I know there will be times when I had the IQ of the R6 for video (though I don't do a lot of that). The R seems great at High ISOs up to 6400 which is good enough for me, YMMV.
So I'm debating taking the few MP cut for the other features, or getting an R to start out with since it is still an upgrade from my Rebel in terms of MP, being FF vs entry-level DSLR, better AF, and (slightly) higher shooting speed...and then perhaps waiting for a higher-MP R6 2 to come out later.
I'm going to get the R and skip on the R6, the new firmware updates on the R, really improve AF performance especially since the 1.4 version firmware upgrade.
Thoughts? Experiences with either camera?
I just think the R6 costs too much (just my opinion, nothing more).... That said, Panasonic recently released the S5 for $2000, Sony is supposed to be releasing something small for about $2000, Nikon Z5 while not competition for the R6 per se, combined with these other 2 cameras might help drive the cost down on the R6. So how soon do you need a new camera; can you wait and see what happens price-wise?
They are both really great cameras, just add the best glass you can afford and you'll be happy with whatever you choose.
