Using a Tripod for Flower Macros

Hi Everyone:

I have been resisting using a tripod for a long time. I have a macro-suitable tripod (Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 263AB), but I am concerned that it will intrude on my freedom of movement when establishing composition and will represent an impediment to portability (although it is fairly light weight). The issue though is that I am using a manual (projection) lens with very thin dof (see below for sample image). I am beginning to think that I will never achieve consistently good focus without the stability offered by a tripod. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

-Charles
