I don't really disagree, and full disclosure I've never owned anything wider than 24mm equivalent.  But there have been plenty of instances when I haven't gotten the shot that I saw in my mind's eye because of the lack of something wider.  It's not at all necessary, but I do think an ultra-wide lens will be fun - not just for panoramic shots but also for playing with perspective.
