That's interesting, because I don't know of any way of making it so that it doesn't display. Not saying there isn't one, but if there is, I don't know what it is.

Just to be clear, when you half-press the shutter button, are you holding it down? Because it's not like the '*' button, which keeps the exposure locked even after you release it. You have to keep it pressed.

Also, I'm pretty sure the above statement is the default behavior of the camera, but you can check that in the menu under the C.Fn tab under C.Fn II: Others, Screen 2, which is where you can configure all of the buttons.
