The connection is Bluetooth.

I have tested it only casually, but 1st impression was that it worked with no fuss. There is a gps indicator in the viewfinder that flashes if no gps is available, and it stayed solid when I turned on the feature.

Thank you for the update.

I am  professionally involved with reseach and deploymenet use of Bluetooth and WIFI. Bluetooth is by far the best choice and I hoped they would use that because it is much more tailored for connections like GPS requires. The flashing failure mode icon is also excellent. The designer clearly knew what he was doing. I have had much success using Bluetooth for robust link requirements like GPS whereas had it been WIFI I think it might take constant fuss to keep it working. Turing off and on the camera all the time does not help. Wireless bluetooth mice on computers work well as example while WIFI is much faster but requires human in the look. Bluetooth is also used for the newer Canon Remote trigger devices and I have had good luck so far with those on my EOS R whereas the older 5DIV and earlier devices were infra red light triggered and require line of sight access to the front of the camera.
