Let me say upfront I am not a fan of Drobo or any proprietary storage/software. You are stuck always buying into their system  whereas a six bay hard rive holder you can use anyone's hard drives. Have you evaluated the cost difference using regular hard drives versus the Drobo system?

While I agree keeping the Raws is both the best (for quality) and most likely the most compact file. Otherwise you would need to save a 16bit tiff and that's going to be much bigger.

Down the road we may see HEIF where you could save a 16bit file with the compression size close to a Jpg, but we are not there. It again looks like both a war between Apple and Google who's file is going win out in acceptability. Right now it sounds like horror stories for people trying to actually convert and use any of these new High Efficienty file formats so probably best to wait.
