The AF in the RP is plenty good enough to stop the Sunset Limited Amtrak Train 2) at 79 mph. That should be fast enough to stop your kid ! Or a bird. NASCAR ? Maybe.

Shutter speed stops the train. Nailing focus is a matter of pre-focus, panning, or relative speed. Try setting up 20 ft from the tracks and nail focus on the fifth window of the fifth car as it goes by at 79 mph using tracking af.

Kids moving around in frame and trying to get eye-af to stick to their eye is a bigger challenge.

Just make your composition on the tripod, pre-focus, and turn AF off to get a higher burst rate. This is a case where it is important to look at the burst rate without AF spec.

You and I agree. My reply was intended to illustrate that the train isn’t a good example of the RP’s tracking and/or eye AF speed. One can nail that shot with manual focus and a little planning, as you point out.
