Can I use an light meter to get monitor brightness?

Like for instance the X-Rite calibrating device I use doesn’t have the option of setting my monitor to a specific output level. The software sets it to whatever the designers thought it should be.

that is odd. Xrite i1 Profiler software allows the user to choose brightness level.
