X-Pro2, did I make a big mistake?
Aug 18, 2020
I switched from film to digital about seven years ago and got my first camera almost 60 years ago. With digital, I started out with micro 4/3 and then moved up to Fuji. All but two of my film cameras were fully manual and most didn't even have a meter in them. I owned eight different Fuji X-series cameras and about a 50/50 mix of AF and MF lenses.
At the beginning of last year, I bought a Leica M9, gave my daughter-in-law, my X100F, and sold my X-T2 with my only two lenses; the Zeiss Touit 1.8/32mm and the Voigtlander 4.5/15mm VM. A few months after that I bought a Leica M8. About a month ago, I decided that I wanted another Fuji and would sell the M8. When I had the X-T2, the image quality was great and the viewfinder was fantastic. But, I didn't like the control layout and in general, I'm not a fan SLR style bodies. So, a couple of weeks ago, I bought a mint condition X-Pro2 that was still on firmware 1.00 and according to the seller, had less than 4000 activations. Since all of my lenses are fully manual Leica M or LTM lenses, I also bought a K&F Concept LM'FX adapter and a Fotodiox M39/FX adapter.
I upgraded the X-Pro2 firmware to the latest release and set up the camera to use with my manual lenses; RAW, B&W film simulation, Red Hi or Red Low Peaking, with the EVF. This is the same setup I used with all of my manual lenses my my old X-T2 and previously, my X-E2. Focusing was never a problem and the red peaking showed up well against the B&W image.
- My current lens lineup includes a Leica Summarit-M 2.5/35mm, Carl Zeiss C Biogon 2.8/35mm, Carl Zeiss C Sonnar 1.5/50mm, Canon 1.8/50mm LTM, and a KMZ Jupiter 8 2.0/50mm LTM.
- The problem I have experienced since using the X-Pro2 is focusing. about 60% of the images I took are not in focus and I can barely see the peaking in the EVF to focus the lenses properly. I started with B&W film simulation with Red Hi and Low Peaking, then tried B&W film simulation with Blue Hi and Low Peaking, and finally, out of frustration switched to Velvia film simulation with white peaking, which has given me the best focus results so far.
So, I'm beginning to think the X-pro2 was a big mistake and am now considering keeping the M8 and selling the X-Pro2.
