The G500 gets my "highly recommended"

I bought a Konica Revio KD-510z (a.k.a., Minolta DiMAGE G500) in mid July, after returning a Sony DSC-P10 that I was unhappy with.

I was looking for the same things as you -- only I wanted "pocketability" versus "portability"

I have been pleasantly surprised with the Konica. IMO, it takes the best photos, with the best dynamic range, out of any of the compact cameras in full auto mode (even though you can adjust sharpness, contrast, color, saturation, etc.).

It's got a very fast 1.3 second startup time, so it's ready to take a photo "on a moments notice". No power buttons to hold down, mode dials to turn, either. Slide the cover open, and the lens instantly extends. It's ready to take a photo by the time you have your subject framed (1.3 seconds startup or shutdown time).

I love this part. It's simple to get a photo, any time the opportunity arises.

I've got an album of some photos I've taken with mine on pbase.com here (you'll also see links to my detailed user review of this model):

BTW, forum poster Nyugen has both the Canon S400, and the Konica KD-510z (Minolta G500). I summarized some quotes from him a while back in this thread (with links to his comments):

Forum poster Adam has also owned both the Canon S400 and Konica KD-510z (as well as the earlier KD-400z and KD-500z). Here's what he had to say:

Read my review (you'll find the links in my pbase.com album), and let me know if I can answer any questions about the Konica.
