The 70-210/4-5.6 is a different lens to the f4 version. Who knows whether it'd suit you for other stuff, but I suspect you've settled on the size/aperture you're ok with. You might also consider the fairly recent Tamron 70-210/4 VC, perhaps others can report on that.

For what it's worth, or as a beater lens, the 70-210/4-5.6 isn't shabby, and I like its rendering and transitions:-

70-210/4-5.6 at f4.2 D750 iso 800

In fact, I think the 70-200 type of range tends to be optically very good in a lot of lenses.
