Creating balanced compositions: what is your thought process?

I would be very interested in the mental steps you take to achieve balanced compositions. I know that this process is hard to describe. With enough experience, things just "click" and you don't have to think about them anymore.

But if you could try and verbalise your thought process, how do you approach compositions? What is your starting point, how do you look for the elements you want to include and exclude, how do you create balance between foreground, midground and background, etc.?

I am especially looking for advice for 24mm (perhaps the focal length I struggle most with, wider and narrower is fine) and for compositions in landscape orientation for shorter image ratios (4:3, 5:4, 1:1).
