Hi everyone. I just picked up the RP (still on way from Canon) to replace my 80D since I wanted an "in" into the FF world. Anyways, I am on a budget, but I can get the 24-105 EF L lens (first version since I don't do any videography) for around 400€. I could also get the RF version for 1,100€. That's considerably more. I know from reviews that the RF version is faster and sharper by a bit, but since it's already a big step up from what I currently have... should I stick with the adapter + 24-105 EF version and save 700€ for more glass down the line, or should I just save up now and get the RF version? Is the EF + adapter going to be so darn awkward on the RP?
Thanks.
I would add the RF 24-105 4-7.1. This lens is just made for the RP. Light and handles beautifully. The faster f4 L version is better (i have that also), mostly at the wide end but the 7.1 is very good at the long end (I was very surprised at how good it is at mid to long FLs) and it's not terrible at the wide end.
Don't be scared of the f7.1 as it is actually faster than a f5.6 APSC lens on your 80D and the RP has very good high ISO. If wanting a low light lens the RF 35 1.8 makes a good compliment and like the 24-105 is small/light and handles well on the RP.
I handled an RP with the EF 24-105 STM and adapter and didn't like it. Long and the weight being further out just didn't handle well. The older L version is even heavier so it would only be worse. IQ wise the RF L lens is definitely a step up from the older L version. The slower RF version is probably just a bit behind the old EF L version at the wide end (but the L has mustaches distortion at 24mm) and of course is slower at the long end.
The only real downside of the 24-105 4-7.1 is that if you like to shoot wide a lot and also make very large prints it might not be the best choice. Otherwise it's a great all around lens for an RP. Price is very reasonable also.
I'll add that the 24-105 L version is a superb lens, but it is a bit big for an RP and for most of the FL range there really isn't much IQ difference between it and the slower RF version. IQ wise you can't go wrong with this lens, but make sure you want to carry it around with you as it is considerably heavier than the slower one and for me at least messes up the otherwise great handling of the RP. It is much better suited for the R or R5/6 bodies. I use mine on an R and it handles well but the camera/lens combo is much heavier than the the RP with the slower lens.
