What is causing this issue backing up in Win 7?

I don't recall this issue when using an external SSD for backup.  In Explorer I would just drag a whole directory from the computer to the external SSD.  No glitch.

However, I am encountering issues when doing the same thing with an extenal HDD (the slim models, maybe as someone said, a 2.5mm like in a laptop).  I would drag a lot of big folders from one internal drive to the external HDD connected via USB 3.0 and it would freeze.  What I mean by freeze is that Explorer would become unresponsive.  It would not respond to mouse clicks, etc.

Maybe it has something to do with the cache or space left on the internal drive?  Everything would freeze to the point where I would have to reboot.  I see the lights still going on (flickering like it is still working) the external HDD but the computer is non-responsive.

Any ideas what is wrong?  I can drag single smaller folders over to the external HDD and it works fine.  Only when I try and drag a large folder does the computer freeze up.  Like I said, don't recall this happening when using an external SSD but I don't recall exactly if I dragged a whole bunch of large folders over.  I must have because I don't want to sit there and drag individual folders over and over.
