Re: Tom's Guide's take

Nearly all Android security risk has been from bad apps. Anybody who sideloads apps (APKs) from sites other than the Play Store should be running a third party malware scanner. There are good, lightweight free ones.  (I use Bitdefender free, there are several  others - worth searching tech mag reviews for lab testing.) The Google Play Protect local scanning has not tested so well in labs, but the Play Store itself has been about as safe as Apple's App Store, both rarely have security lapses.
