Ah, it works!

I had a lot of dust inside my Sigma 100-400 C and simply unscrewed the front, sucked up the dust, and reassembled, but I managed to get the two tiny bit of shims around two of the screws that hold the lens in position in the wrong place (I wasn't even aware they were there at all, to tell the truth), so it suddenly suffered a bit of astigmatism.

Now getting them back was fairly simple, even though smaller fingers would have helped.
But now it needed some fine-tuning, which I did yesterday (another lovely day here with temperatures in the high 80).

A very young blue-tit, a little over two inches long (from beak to anus), acted as my model for the test shots (sadly a dusty window in between):

So a combination of a slightly tilted front lens element and not perfectly tuned focus ruined almost all shots yesterday.

Today it looks much, much better!
