Likely same OEM for Viltrox and Tokina atx-m
3

As we all know, two of the announced Viltrox 1.4 lenses are out (the 23 mm and the 33 mm), and we're still waiting for the release of the 56 mm.

Kenko Tokina announced three Fuji-X atx-m (m: mirrorless) lenses with exactly the same parameters to be released in autumn which is also well known here.

From an interview of Toshihisa Iida, General Manager of Fujifilm's Optical Device and Electronic Imaging Products Division on DPReview, we know that Tokina (potentially in contrast to Viltrox) receive the official X-mount spec from Fuji.

Through a recent post by jjz2, I became aware of the article, "Debunked: Tokina's New Lens is a Copy/Rebrand/Rebadge of the Viltrox STM 85mm f1.8". The article is about 85 mm f/1.8 lenses from Tokina and Viltrox for Sony.

From this article, we can conclude that

  • Tokina and Viltrox have no business relationship (which was already posted here in the forum)
  • Tokina and Viltrox very likely share the same OEM
  • The Tokina/Viltrox lenses are not 100 % identical but veeery similar
  • Tokina may use their own coatings

Coatings are key for the performance of a lens and for example play a key role when it comes to flare resistance. We will only know whether there is a significant difference in performance between the Tokina and Viltrox lenses after professional comparative tests have been made.

On B&H, the Tokina is slightly more expensive ($437 vs $399). On Amazon Germany, the price is more or less identical (I am talking about the 85 mm Sony versions).

BR,

Martin
