Very true, if you need 400mm then 300mm, or even worse 150 with 2x TC to get to 300mm wont be enough. Btw, I've nothing against using a TC, but it's no substitute for a lens with the reach you want.

75-300 or Panasonic 100-300 are both pretty good lenses (but consumer grade lenses) so if you regularly need 300mm then get one of those. Same if you really need 400, then a 100-400 is the best option.
