I've been doing this for a couple of years now. First I converted my existing library to DNG, which basically halved the hard drive space it occupied. Then I started converting new photos to DNG on import. I just insert the SD card and tell Lightroom to copy as DNG. In addition to the smaller file sizes, the other advantage is that you don't have to have a separate sidecar file for Lightroom changes if that's what you use (probably the same for some other programs since DNG is open). It obviously takes longer to import since it has to convert every photo, but it's actually pretty quick.

I haven't noticed any disadvantages other than the increase in time, but maybe somebody else will have something to add on that front.
