What about RF 24-70 f2.8 IS L? In between the two in size, weight and price. Gives you 24mm and IS. Much more reasonable to carry.

Interesting! I really hadn't considered this particular lens, but I am now! It just might be the best option!

I would do a little more research before concluding it is the best option. I actually rented both the 24-70 and 28-70 recently to compare them. What I noticed is that the 24-70 is essentially a more expensive 24-105 with better light-gathering capabilities but a more limited focal range. It does NOT have that prime-like look the 28-70 gives you. I was thinking the same thing initially: the 24-70 is the best compromise, so there is no point in getting the 28-70 since it is so heavy. However, after testing it side-by-side, I came to a different conclusion: since I already have the 24-105, I would be better off saving a bit more to get the 28-70 and keep the 24-105 as well. Then I could keep the 24-105 for when I am traveling during the day and want the convenience afforded by the extra range, and also have the 28-70 when I know what to expect as well as when there is less light available. My two cents.

That's a good way to put it... The 28-70 gives a prime look, that the 24-70 f/2.8 and 24-105 f/4L, can't. Really it's those can't do the DOF or light gathering of an f/2 lens.
