That can happen, but it's not why most of us use photo editing software.  Cropping and light adjustment are probably the most common edits made.  You can really significantly improve the impact of your images with very basic adjustments ... without adding any elements that weren’t originally there.  At its most basic level, it can be used to just straighten the horizon on an image ... which corrects a major source of distraction.

Of course if you shoot RAW, you really must post process to bring in sharpness, color, and light.  
Post processing is a tool which is available to all of us.  It let's us make our pictures better.  And yes, some people can really overdo it, and wind uo with horribly over processed images.  But ... that's up to the individual.  You should familiarize yourself with a simple editing program and just play with it.  You may be surprised at just how much better careful editing can make your work.
