Spot Metering Problem on R5
2

New to the forum, but wanted to get input from some of the professionals here.

I received my R5 today along with the new 800mm RF lens - and immediately went to work testing it on some wildlife photography.

I often photograph birds.  A common situation is a bird sitting on a branch with a bright sky behind.  I always use spot metering to get the right exposure on the bird.

I have used this method successfully for years using my 5D Mark IV and all of my long lenses (up to 600mm).

Long story short, the metering circle is HUGE on the R5 and doesn't come close to allowing me to ONLY meter the bird (even on this long 800mm lens).

I have discovered in the manual that the R5 uses a 3.1% circle whereas the 5D mkIV uses only 1.3%.  That's a massive difference and the circle diameter is not selectable in any menu I can find.

For me, this feels like a screw-up on Canon's part.  Why is this so large?  Or is there a different method I should be using in this situation?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
