Go closer, much closer. Middle is not bad if your subject fills the frame. Here's a cat and a bird and they are smack in the middle, but filling the frame.

Yes, I know, I only used those with a lot of empty space because I thought that would make it possible to demonstrate composition by cropping

So these are fine then?
