That ENIAC is still fully digital. I'd propose analog sensor output being fed via a tiny tube amp before entering the ADC.

There are some reasonably modern Canon SLRs you could to that to. Not that it would help as likely the sensor is entering saturation as well. But it could be a fun project. Especially doing the phase-correct handling of that 100 MHz or so video stream.
