If you don't shoot 4K/8K video, spending $2500/$3500 for R6/R5 seem rather meaningless. There are only (3) still improvements:
- Animal Eye AF for birding is very useful
- Faster FPS, as both EOS-R / RP are SLOW for action
- IBIS
I tend to crop heavily shooting wild life, so a lower resolution 20mp is a no go for me. 26mp RP and 30mp EOS-R buy me more room (resolution insurance) to crop and isolate the bird. Sadly both older camera struggle in C-AF with poor FPS. So neither R/RP/R6 offer a compelling solution.
- I can use a lower price $1499 Canon R7 with 32mp APS-C sensor from 90d/M6ii. Hopefully it'll come with IBIS and animal eye AF like the newly released Nikon Z5
Lastly even if you shoots video for a living, you can't use either R5/R6 reliably for wedding. Key moment when Bridie walking down an isles to her saying YES can take as long as an hour depending on the brides, the unforseen delays etc.., you can't afford to have camera overheats & shutdown @those critical moments. I'm not sure R5 / R6 fits anywhere. Overheating prevent them from being a reliable camcorder for the videographer, low res of R6 make a poor choice for photography, higher resolution 45mp R5 seem overprice comparing to a whopping 61mp Sony A7R4.
R5/R6 are fine cameras, but they're not the "Revolution" as quoted from canons hype machines.
anyone who shot weddings with a 5D4 will find the R5 a worthwhile update. full stop. they would have a counterpart who records video. I've rarely seen wedding photographers now go solo when video is required; I guess it could just be sample bias on my part, but would mean those solo shooters have been avoiding me like the plague.
looks like the R5 is a pretty match against the A7R4 all things considered.
anyone who is coming from a 6D or 5D3 will find the R6 a compelling upgrade, provided they're not leveraging ML firmware.
for those of us on the RP, need to see reviews if the new OLP on the R6 improves sharpness compared to the 26MP RP. Even then, I don't shoot birds that much, and when I do 400 pixels vertically and horizontally isn't big enough for me vs IBIS and much better DR.
