exposure compensation - what's going on?

Hi,

Another beginner question, embarrassing, but... if not here - where?..

When I use exposure compensation, I basically "ask" the camera to make the picture of the scene to become brighter or darker.

My question is - what does the camera do when I, e.g. depress the shutter half way, and then add +1 stop?

Does it increase the actual iso to collect more light?

Does it make the exposure longer to collect more light?

Does it increase the aperture size (lowers the f-number) to collect more light?

whatever the answer is - is it true for all camera and manufacturers, or do they each choose their own method?

Thanks
