R5 overheats when shooting photos and switching to video

Irrevelent to many users. Myself included.

People are trying to test the limits of the camera, good for them. Buy the tool you need.

If the camera overheats from a photo shoot all day, then let us know. That's news.

Interesting.....I wonder if ‘regular’ 4K could be shot?

Yeah, I am really disappointed with this tweet from Gerald. I am a member on his YouTube channel and this kind of unclear post is not what I would have expected from him.

Little details go along way.

which part did you not understand?

Nothing new. Typical clickbait. With the added benefit that he gets praised for his ‘honesty and integrity’ for giving those who were never going to buy (or couldn’t buy) the R5 anyway an excuse to make themselves feel good for making the ‘right’ decision and not wanting one.

I am not denying that it is very possible the camera cannot record 8K after a long photoshoot. However, it is the way this information is being presented that makes me question the presenter’s motives. ‘More bad news.’ When you start your message this way, you are essentially flagging it as clickbait in my view.

Gerland is one of the most sound voices on technical matters when it comes to Cameras. id check out his youtube videos before making such broad statements, or at least post your R5 tests so we can witness your expertise.

I have pre ordered this camera (from two places) and will be cancelling monday morning.

Sounds like you have a crush. That’s cool....

As long as it doesn't stop me from shooting stills in order to cool down, this doesn't seem like a huge issue - but it's at least good to know as a usage data point.

Sounded pretty clear to me. Shooting stills for an hour nixes the ability to shoot 4K HQ. It's enough of an issue, I kinda don't want to know any more, lol.
What is clear about "shooting stills for an hour"?

I often shoot one photo in an hour when hiking. I have spent well over an hour working on single composition.

When shooting Air shows I shoot 500 shots in 30mins.

These are critical details for me

"Every minute that you spend taking photos with it reduces the time you can shoot HQ video. Today I shot photos for 1 hour..."

What does that actually mean? How many photos? How many continuous photos? How much time between photos? I can spend an hour taking 100 short flash exposures of a family or an hour taking two 30-minute astrophotography exposures. That statement is virtually meaningless.

I wish there was a forum for Canon cameras that banned diehard fans and people easily offended by negative comments about their Canon. I remember seeing a video from PhotoRec years ago where the reviewer was one of the first to negatively comment on the touch bar. Oh man. These people were out for blood. It turned out that he was right. No wonder we can't get honest reviews on YouTube. Say something bad about the camera you're already sold on and it's like you said something mean about their child or something.

then this is the camera for you!

im sure you wont have any issues.

some of us might though
Thanks for reading the whole post...

I need that high speed shutter as well. I often switch to video after firing 60-100 shots of an F22 and if I am heat limited to any video that would be really awesome to know early.

Looks like you spent more time thinking about how to defend him than you did reading my post. I never said he was wrong or lying. My issue is the way this information is being presented (reminds me of sensationalist tabloids). I am actually sure he is telling the truth that a photoshoot limits one’s ability to shoot subsequent video.

I would love to do some of my own testing, but Canon hasn’t given me early access to the camera. But you already know that, right?

A smart move indeed. If this camera does not meet your needs (and it will certainly not be the right device for everyone) then your hard-earned cash would be better spent elsewhere.

I wish there was a fourm that banned people for posting in discussions without adding anything but criticism of that fact people were having a discussion...

I agree that some (many) may overreact. That is certainly part of the problem. However, another part of the problem is how some of these points are brought up.
1. More bad news: this camera couldn’t shoot any video after one hour of taking photos.
2. Something that happened today: I was shooting for an hour, but for some reason was unable to shoot 8K or 4KHQ video afterwards. It may have been a bug, or perhaps this is a real limitation. I will need to test it again and see others’ experiences to ensure this isn’t a one-off thing.
Content is one thing; how you deliver that message is something entirely different. Otherwise, I have no doubt that the camera has major time restrictions in its current form. My two cents.

An example of how one can relay information without making it look like clickbait. Interesting enough, this comes from a website that covers Sony cameras almost exclusively, yet they seem to be doing a significantly better job at not coming off as spoiled brats. Again, I am NOT disputing the findings, just disagreeing with the sensationalism evident in some of these posts.
