Photographing people in the street
1

I was watching a short documentary about Steve McCurry walking around some place in the US getting close up to people and shooting away at random. A woman on a bench reading a newspaper who didn't even look up at him, standing right in front of a man on a bench, although I think the man was asleep, and another woman lighting a cigarette. I'd love to do that but I'm sure people would react in a hostile way.

Do any of you just do that, throw caution to the wind and almost get in someones face? I suppose it's a bit easier from a distance with a telephoto lens, but with a short focal length lens, you've got to get quite close really.
