I did use it on my first smartphone years ago, but modern phone with Gorilla glass don't need it. The best you can treat your phone with is a case that also covers the front. At one day in time you're going to drop it and than your case will help more than a screen protector.

Phones with Gorilla glass still get scratched - also the coating on top often scratches first.

However these scratches aren't very noticeable and you have to shine a light directly on the screen to be able to pick them out.

Apparently with the new Gorilla Glass, drop resistance has been improved while scratch resistance has not gotten better with Gorilla Glass 5 and above?

No way around it yet.  You can't avoid scratches without screen protectors.. doesn't matter which gorilla glass.
