I have shot a few projects with the GH5 and the photo quality is NOT near NX at all.
It is not the same league, unfortunately, or else I would have migrate to GH5 completely, as I am already using it on a lot for video projects and I own the 12-100mm Olympus lens (to use with the GH5).
That was my first hand experience with the G9. Perhaps I got a lemon, but the IQ was subpar as compared to NX500, and not really a significant a step up from my EM5 mki... That is unfortunate because I already have some good glass on the m4/3 system.
I am waiting to see what GH6 will be, maybe for my needs will cover my photo needs also.
20mgpxls for pro use is a bit limited also, one of the reasons I am sceptical about the R6 (I have EF and EF-S glass also).
I have decided that 24mgpxls are the minimum for me, but 20mgpxls full frame, maybe is good enough (for other reasons than resolution). I am waiting to see independent tests of R6, the new Sony A7sIII and the GH6 (which we do not even have a good rumor yet), or if the new Fuji X-H2 surprises us all (I doubt it, it will have a significant, or two, weaknesses for video).
Your findings match mine. 24MP is the minimum. I have a X100F with a 24MP sensor and I was quite happy with the results as compared to the 16MP in my EM5 for my larger than usual printing needs. For social media, and small prints the EM5 was more than enough though.
I work mostly for film and TV the last few years, so I have put my personal projects on hold for the moment and 0 professional photography for 2020 (I declined all photography jobs), I haven't even use the P4K on a project yet, so I can wait until early 2021 for my new purchases and re-arrange my photo/video priorities again.
