Options might include IBIS, a thumb stick and some level of water/dust sealing.

I don't think Canon is going to give us these anytime soon.  It would place the M Series too close to the R, and Canon is very strict on differentiation.  The M6ii is already very close to the R's in a lot of its capabilities (IME).
