Macro margin: OIS/IBIS, flash, high ISO?

Macro margin: OIS/IBIS, flash, high ISO?

I'm noticing a consistent drop in the keeper rate in moving from stabilised to unstabilised macro shooting (Nikon D5500 with 90mm macro OIS to X-T20 with 60mm macro).

What's your approach for a given aperture/DOF?

  • increase the ISO
  • use flash (on/off camera, multiple, diffuser etc?)
  • use a tripod (unworkbale for my approach)
  • use a body with IBIS (am currently evaluating an X-H1)
  • use the 80mm macro OIS ($$$ + weight)
  • other?

E.g. in shaded daylight with unstabilised setup and base ISO, I could not get a clean shot hand-held:

Whereas with bright sunlight there's some room to move:
