I am thinking of:

  • 300mm f4 PF.
  • 70-200mm f2.8 FL.
  • 80-400mm f4.5-5.6 AFS.

The 300mm attracts due to size.

The 80-400mm because of the range.

The 70-200mm because it is fast.

I had the 80-400 but sold it a long time ago, and for its cost
I'd get the 70-200/4.0G and the Sigma 100-400 C.
Which, come to think of it, is just what I did!

I like those two lenses, a lot: The Sigma is far
sharper in the long end, compared to the 80-400G,
and the 70-200/4.0G is just the right size and weight!

But the alternative, the 300 PF, plus a Sigma 135/1.8 Art,
that would be near perfect. Plus a 58/1.4, of course!

Should have bought that 300 when I had a chance (I got those other two).

Thank you for the feedback.

I want to get the fastest, longest, and best quality telephoto lens (at least 200mm but ideally longer) within a budget of 2k. It is not an easy choice as options get limited when you combine all of these factors. I tend not to buy third-party brands when it comes to anything over 1k. For the same reason I would not buy used equipment either.

The Z mount may be getting tele-converters soon so 70-200mm Z lens is probably better option than the F mount lens when using TC / Z mount.
