Leibovitz probably saw the gymnast as an extraordinary figure with their body contorted by long years of training, like the English 14th century archers who were so top heavy from practice with the longbow from childhood they could look freakish

Seems the people complaining wanted a conventional shoot or with something smiling which any portrait photographer could do, but wouldn't convey how unusual the subject is.

As for how anybody's colour comes into it, it seems to be on the crude idea that white people shouldn't appropriate black culture or images, which is of course itself another form of exclusivity racism hiding behind language as fancy as the speaker knows how to make it.
