I did a MTF comparison article on the 600 and 800. while I can see the 600 - it does fall short of the 100-500, though a lot cheaper, lighter, etc.

however, the 800mm in my mind is a clear win over the 100-500 + 1.4x TC if you are always jammed up against the telephoto end.

Did you have hands on access to the RF100-500?

Hah. I wish. any testing of R's won't happen until the R5s though.  Even then, I pulled back on testing because I wasn't happy with the repeatable quality of the results, there was just too much measurement error that was mathematically unexplainable.

What is the f number when the lens is at 400? Is the f number of the RF100-500mm more or less than f5.6 at 400mm?

someone stated it's "around" 5.6 - supposedly 5.8.

I am not surprised the RF 800f11 is better IQ than the more expensive zoom + the expensive 1.4X TC. The zoom plus TC can zoom which is handy to enable you to use the zoom capability to find the subject at low focal length and then with the subject put in the center to frame to the 800mm equivalent FL.

This handy finding by zooming can not be done with smaller, lighter and cheaper RF800 lens. However small, light and cheap does sound good to me too.

I was. I mean we're talking $899 versus $3100 or so.

if say 80% of your shots are at 700mm with the TC, then get a 24-105 and a 800mm and call life good
