Exposure meter when not in manual

As a beginner, I've now learned about the exposure meter in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen. So when I'm in manual mode, I realise that it's good to press focus and observe the exposure meter to see if it's in the middle, or moved left or right to check i'm going to get correct exposure when I take the shot.

How do I check correct exposure in Av or Tv ? Because I noticed the exposure meter doesn't move, it sits right in the middle. If I go to manual and  set  exactly the same ISO, shutter speed and f-stop that I had in Av or Tv, the exposure meter is often left or right of centre.
