Is there any reason to use one sharpening technique over the other? For example, is it better to use unsharp mask, rather than high pass sharpen?

Some methods are better than others. I find that Photoshop's Smart Sharpen, in Lens Blur mode, works better than Unsharp mask. Some members of this forum use software that has Richardson–Lucy deconvolution, such as RawTherapee. Some folks on the Retouching forum recommend Topaz Sharpen AI.

This is an area of active research, so I'd expect further advancement.
