Formula for Capture Sharpening

Macro guy wrote:

Is there a formula or a general guideline for how much sharpening one has to do and what type of sharpening to use i.e. high pass sharpen, unsharp mask, etc.?

Sharpening can have different objectives: capture, creative and output .

For capture sharpening of an image taken with good technique deconvolution is it imho (Raw Therapee, PS Smart Sharpen, Focus Magic, Nik Raw Sharpener). The radius used depends on the camera/lens properties and the f-number.

For FF cameras and good lenses in the working range the radius can be estimated as 0.1874 divided by the system's MTF50 in cycles per pixel as set up. These days it tends to work out at around 0.5-0.7 pixels.

To see where that formula comes from see Equation (1) in the link below
