If I were a Canon FF or even APSC user (I was an APSC user once), I would never consider such a slow long lens.

I'm using a 100-400 that's f/6.3 on APS-C, At a 600/9.5 equivalent, that's not even 1/2 stop better than 600/11. Time will tell which option is sharper.

It's about equivalent to the long end of the Sony RX 10 IV.

And the rumors make it out to be light and affordable.

This would make these lenses pointless to me.

I don't think I'd have much interest, myself. But Canon wants to offer options that make people forget about APS-C. And cheap long teles are part of that.

Why they didn't go with f/8 is beyond me.

At least for the 600 ... I agree, that would have been a better compromise. Nikon's 200-500/5.6 is only $1400 and Sony's $2000 200-600 offers 600/6.3. Then again, Nikon's 300/4 is a $2000 lens and 600/8 is like putting a 2X TC on that.

800mm f8 means a front lens group 4 inches across.  You'd be looking at at least $2000 for something like that, if not a lot more.
