Trying to photo the moon

I had a go at this last night. I know, running before I can walk. An almost full moon only visible in a gap between the houses across the road from me. This was 1.30am and I took my camera and tripod out and placed it in position. Bit worrying in case anyone passed by and wondered what the hell I was doing or might have even wanted to steal my gear. In fact after a few minutes I heard people coming so quickly picked up the tripod and rushed back indoors. I'm going to try again tonight and there's a full moon for a couple of nights so maybe I've got a chance to get it right. I'm determined to get a good shot of the moon.

I wondered if you can give me any tips. I managed to capture it and I can see the basic patterning that we all recognise but totally not in focus. First time I've used the LCD screen to view a subject and it was hard to tell if it was in focus because it looked so small. I just realised I should have used the camera's magnifier button to be able to blow it up on the screen and THEN adjust focus.

I used my Tamron 70-300mm on my 5D mk2. At 300mm, ISO 200, f8 and 1/25 shutter made the moon too bright. At the same ISO and f stop, 1/640 was better, image caught all the moon mapping but a bit dark and at 1/200 better still, brighter without losing the patterning. Because I didn't get the focusing right, there's absolutely no craters or fine detail.

At 300mm, is there a better combo of ISO, f stop and shutter speed you'd recommend? I understand it's good to lock the mirror open to reduce camera shake, can I do that on this camera? I set a 2 second self timer. Here's the terrible photos and feel free to laugh. No really. The last one is kind of on the right track I think?

Better again, still rubbish though.
