Last year I bought the 19mm pc. I had wanted a tilt shift lens for years and after reading many, many reviews decided on the 19. However, a year later now and I still don’t really understand how to use it. Not the mechanics of the tilt and shift but what they do regarding my photography.

Pictures showing what tilt / shift can do: https://www.flickr.com/groups/tiltshift/pool/

  • Shift is for correcting verticals in buildings, or for panos, or for keeping your camera out of reflections in architecture.
  • Tilt is for adjusting the plane of focus - laying it down to cover a landscape, or sideways to have an angled wall in focus, or a picture of a guitar at an angle with the whole front in focus (not with your 19mm, more like with an 85mm), for examples.

I finally got a L bracket and have kept the 19 on the camera to force myself to use it but I just don’t get it. The lens can turn on the body why?

To put the plane of focus along whatever direction you want. Bend it down for landscape, sideways for architecture, or anything in between depending on what works for the subject.

I've had some luck directing people here:

Thank you so much.
