But PDAF is possible now, and there's only one company that doesn't use it: Panasonic. Which if you look at the awesome video functionality that Pany has, the one thing it's missing is the ability to track focus well (I can always tell when I'm watching video shot with Pany autofocus -- it sucks!)

So every year that passes without Pany having PDAF, they're losing another slice of the market. If Oly releases another PenF with a good PDAF implementation, it will be very hard to pass it up ...

Two things:

  1. In the realm of professional, high quality video, manual focus is king. There are reasons for that. One of which is because the DP / Director / Focus Puller determines what is or isn't in focus to suit the scene.

Exactly. I usually use manual focus for video myself, and I'm not even a pro. That's why I explicitly called out AF. And I do see a lot of video shot with Pany cameras, and I always can tell because it is literally a tell-tale.

  1. If you are expecting Olympus to release anything new now, you have a sense of optimisim far greater than it's distance from reality. I wish it were another way, but in terms of imaging, Olympus are done. NewCo have not stated their aims. My expectations are not high, that way my disappointment can be kept low.

Yes, I'm optimistic. But I acknowledge that you are as likely to be correct as I, given what we know.
